Basketball year 7/8 team VS teachers!

Basketball year 7/8 team VS teachers!      7/7/17

Today the teachers versed the students in a game of basketball, we lost by quite a lot but we had a good time playing anyway. The Monday team (us) went first in battling against them and we didn't do very well, I think we got 1 or 2 points but overall we had a good time. Next was the Friday team, they're a bit better but they still got around the same points as us, maybe 3 or 4. The teachers on the other hand got around maybe 1,000,000?? That sounds about right. Anyway, no one cheered us on accept ourselves because mot of the classes said "Boo!" when we got a point ad "Yahoo!!!" when the teachers got one, so yeah.
The care values we all showed were community (connecting), active thinking, respect and Excellence.

Technology #1

                     Technology #1          7-7-2017

On Thursday (Yesterday) the 7/8 group traveled by bus to Lincoln Primary  like we do every Thursday.
We all hop off the bus and split off into our won groups; No one who likes me is in my group so it's quite unsettling in my group for me. But anyway, we're in Science this time and we learn't about Atoms the first week, then we learn't about rockets and this week we learn't about microscopes. We saw lots of stuff while looking into them like weird flowers, frog blood, a home flies leg (and-more-not-so-great-stuff-to-look-at) We had fun though which was good so yeah.

The care values/leadership qualities I showed were: Community (collaborating with stuff at science) Active Thinking (Questioning what some stuff was) Respect (Communicating) and Excellence (Being resilient).

I have created a google slide to show my findings on the famous scientist; Ernest Rutherford.

Happy reading :)

Student Leaders #8 - Bake Sale!

Student Leaders #8    - Bake Sale!     30/6/2017

On Tuesday we had a bake sale! I brought food and also brought money to buy some other food to add to the total money for the year 8's trip to Wellington (which I'm in)! The House Captains (also me) and a few of the other Student Leaders helped to set up the bake sale with tables to put the food on and also bringing the food out onto those tables. We set two tables up in each ares of the school (the juniors, basketball court, and the senior area).
Then as a House Captain I had to manage one of the stalls. I did this with Alex and Tracy and we did the basketball court one which was packed when people started coming to get the delicious cakes and biscuits. But the only downfall about this job was that you had to stand in front of all the amazingly done cupcakes... and NOT eat them :(
Well we did it which was good, (but it was very hard to do) and we got on with our job well.

We showed all the CARE values when doing this.

Student Leaders #7

            Student Leaders #7                    23/6/2017

The students leaders have been deciding what action they should take on in their community to make it a better place. They decided on painting a chorus box (maybe 2 or 3) so that it doesn't get graffiti on it. It was a good idea so Anneke and Jacinta (me) emailed the student council about it and they replied saying it's good and we'll get paints so we can do it! The care values we showed were community, active thinking, respect and excellence because we were at a meeting and we need to show all of these when doing that! :)

Student Leaders trip to the City Council (a poem)

Student Leaders trip to the City Council

                                                            30/5/2017
On the 29th Of May 2017 the Student leaders of Oakland's School journeyed to The Center of Christchurch City to visit the very significant, City Council.

They walked out of school,
in the direction of the pool,
And waited there for the bus.
When it finally came,
they hopped on to claim
their  comfortable seats.

They set off on their expedition,
and gained permission,
to enter the Christchurch City Council.
When they stride inside,
they try to abide,
and enjoy their time with the guide.

After a slideshow,
they got to know,
some professionals that work there.
Each group learn't something new,
and conversed as they chew,
their morning tea.

After that they do some activities,
in some cases involving festivities,
they share back to the group.
Then they go to the chamber,
now here's a disclaimer,
It was as fun as can be!

Then not too later,
they met a nice waiter,
in a place called Hachi Hachi.
They ate their food,
all in a good mood,
then they go down to the town square.

After a bit of walking,
and a little talking,
they arrived at their destination,
with the great temptation,
to have fun!

Swing ball, golf, instruments and more,
it was totally great for sure!
Now they see the remains,
of Christchurchs terrains,
of which used to be a beautiful cathedral.

After that event,
the rest of the time we spent,
was going back to school,
this trip was way cool!

- By Jacinta, Alex and Katie.

Student Leaders #6

Student Leaders #6                        23/5/2017

There is a new roster for the flags and bins job (we discussed this at the meeting at morning tea yesterday). Every even week I am on in the mornings for flags and bins, along with Tracy, Sophie, Natasha and myself. Then on the even weeks the other half of the house captains (Emily, Cormac, Alex and Amelia) do the afternoon bins. And to make it all fair we swap on the odd weeks... (we do the afternoon stuff on an odd week and the others do the mornings on an odd week).

Flags and bins Job

                 Flags and bins Job             22/5/2017

I came to school in the morning and found out the flags and bins hadn't been done; I'm not on in the morning so I wanted to know what was up. It turned out that someone who does it in the morning, wasn't here today, probably sick, and the others in the morning had "forgotten" or something. So Mr. Ladbrook called all the house captains together and we talked about how no one had done them. He told us we all had to go do them NOW, so we did. It was very cold today so I didn't really want to go outside but I did anyway.

I went with Tracy who had just got to school and hadn't even done the roll yet. I did two of the flags (Active Thinking and Excellence) and as I was doing them I realized that there are only 3 morning people and 5 afternoon people because someone switched to afternoon which meant it was unbalanced so we're going to sort this out today in our Student Leader meeting at morning tea.

Cross country

                        Cross country                17/5/2017

Oaklands School journeyed to Westlake park to begin their cross country. Our bags were all packed; lunch, drink bottle, jacket etc. The House Captains (us), were all carrying cricket bats for the games are are going to play with the other year levels. Before we went down in the long line  of kauri students we spread ourselves down it to act as parent helpers because there weren't enough. I'm looking forward to running in the cross country with all my friends!

When we got there it was very cold and there was a slight wind. We (all the house captains) split off the group and started unpacking and getting ready for their games. The rest of the school arrived and we all went back to sit in the area we were supposed to sit in (the athletes zone)!

The first runners up were the year 4's! While the year 6's went to go play their game with the other House Captains. After a while of wandering around the place, I did my game with the year 7/8's and then we got ready for our run! I was waiting for a friend to get out of the bathroom and we almost missed the start because they had already lined up and were all ready to go in their lines... we got there just before the first of the year 7/8's went off (the year 7 girls). The year sevens went, then shortly after the year 7 boys, then us, finally the year 8 boys after that.

We were all off running, I didn't go full speed because I was savoring my energy for later on in the race. I ran with my friends; we said we would all run together but if someone stops running and walks then we could just keep going on because we didn't want to wait for our friends. :P

This is Part 1,

The care values we all showed were all of them because that is what we were supposed to do!

Student Leaders #5

                       Student leaders #5       11/5/2017

We have been told to go into google classroom to put a picture/video/some text about the city council and what they do. I've been planning to take a picture of the park across the street from my house because the city council comes once a month to mow the grass there. I've also seen them dealing with a job over there that was about someone driving all over the grass there in a vehicle at night. I know this because I went there the next morning and saw the tyre tracks and a city council truck doing stuff there.
I will probably take the picture after school.
The care values I will show at the park should be all of them. :)

Student Leaders #3

Student Leaders #3                       11/4/2017

We had a meeting to decide who has done their role properly. I, for one, had; which meant I could play the game with the others who had done their role properly that term. All the student leaders got to, I forgot which game we played but i remember it being fun. Overall this week has been pretty good. The care values i showed in and out of the game were community (connecting and collaborating), Active thinking (questioning "How do we play this game then?"), respect (communicating), and excellence (being resilient).

Student leaders #4

Student leaders #4                                 1/5/2017

We had the first meeting of term 2 this week at morning tea time. We were given some work to do about the city council because we are having a trip there (in maybe week 5) which sounds fun, we will get to see what the city council does!
Anyway the work we have to complete is we have to take either a picture, video or write something about what we think the council does. I think I will take a picture of the park across the street because i know they take care of that because every few weeks a city council truck pulls up and the cut the grass.
In this meeting the care values we all showed were communication, connecting ideas and questioning about the trip.

HLC #2 Make a code language (design your own challenge)

Make a code language 3/4/2017

E10. Design your own challenge:

I did this challenge with my friend Alex, previously we had done an activity in class time with others; about making your own secret language. I had an idea that we could make a code language ourselves and turn it into a home learning challenge, so... here we go!

Unfortunately I cannot write it out on here because they are funny designs that obviously don't show up on the keyboard so if you want to see the live thing just ask me. :)

The way we designed them for each letter we would muddle up what it was made out of... eg;
A = | | -

It is not "A = 11", we took apart what it was made out of (two long lines on the outside and one shorter line forming the inside of the A) we thought this was quite a smart way of doing it so that's what we stuck with... Some of them aren't this way though, some we could not make out a good enough character for the letter so we just had to make them up. :/

Overall this home learning challenge was super fun and I really enjoyed making it! :D

HLC #1 The Great Pyramid of Giza

The great pyramid of Giza        3/4/17

Some Facts:
  • It is the oldest wonder of the world.
  • There are 3 pyramids together, it is the biggest out of those.
  • It is also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops.
  • It is 146.5 meters (481 feet) tall and WAS the tallest man made structure till about 3,800 years ago.
  • Most people’s hypotheses are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place.
  • There are 3 areas inside the pyramid: The lowest chamber; which is near the bottom, the queen and the king’s chamber’s which are situated near the top.
  • It was built around 2580–2560 BC.

A picture of it:

Student Leaders #2

Student Leaders #2                          24/3/2017

Today we got called to a meeting to discuss how everything was going. Hearing everyone else's thoughts, most of them were good, but a few about the house captains doing the flags. I don't think that's actually a problem though, people just are forgetting to do their job or some people are doing the job with their friends and not letting others do it. Some people are doing that to me. Anyway other than that everything is going well, a few comments like: The bin idea is going well, when we host assemblies it looks good, all juniors are liking the bin challenge etc... I'm happy people like it! Care values I showed at the meeting were: Community, Respect and Excellence.

Student Leaders #1

Student Leaders #1                           20/3/2017

Every day after school Cormac, Emily, Natasha and I take in the flags the people in the morning put out. At around 2:45 pm we go to through the hall and into the radio station room (because that's where we put them) and unlock the doors so we can take them in without scratching the sides against the walls. We each go out and get a flag and come back in to put them down (those flags are: The Community flag, the Active Thinking flag, the Respect flag, and the Excellence flag). There are always two left after that because there are six in total so two start locking up the place while two get the last two flags that are still out (which are the 'Oaklands School' flags; situated usually in the parking lot).

After a job well done we go back to finish the last few minutes of school in class.

The care values I showed today were: Community, Active Thinking, Respect and Excellence.

Vocals Lesson #3

Vocals Lesson #3                                10/3/2017

This moring at 9:45am we ventured to the radio room where our vocal lessons are held. This time Elisabeth joined us again (last time she wasn't able to come because she had been put into a different group for a short time), and we practiced our singing and did a few warm-ups before that. We wrote a few notes in our notebooks that we bring every week to this lesson and then we sang "Tomorrow" by Annie and "Where is Love" by Oliver (both musicals I believe) and then we went back to class to get into some SML time! The care values I showed today were Respect (communication and singing :) , Excellence (self aware when walking through the school respectful of others learning) and community.

Vocals lesson #2

Vocals lesson #2                           9/3/2017

On Friday, at 9:45 (since our time was changed) we ventured to the radio room where our singing lesson was held. We greeted our teachers then took our places and put our books on the stand to read our music well. We started with some warm ups and then went straight into singing Tomorrow: by Annie.

It went well and after that she said it went so well that she thinks we should enter in a choir that kids from all around Christchurch go to, to compete against others. I wasn't that keen because I don't like projecting my voice for others to hear so I held back but Katie and Dabok seemed interested so they decided they wanted too.

That's all for today, so ya! The care values I showed were community and respect!

Vocals Lesson #1

     Vocals Lesson #1    17/2/2017

At 10:00 am I meet Elizabeth, Katie and Dabok in the classroom while everyone else goes out to fitness. We venture to he hall which takes us a minute or so then once we're there wait for the last group to come out until we go in. Once we're inside we line up facing the vocals teacher and she asks us to put down our books and find a place in the room to stand before we start practicing. We do the songs 'Tomorrow' by Annie and 'Where is Love' by Oliver and then learned a few musical notes (crochet, quaver, minim etc...) they use in music to identify how to play them or sing them in this case which makes sense to me because I used to play the piano! After that we practiced doing our voices high and low. I'm looking forward to the next lesson! :)
