C6. Give to families in need: Find a way to help those in need.

C6. Give to families in need: Find a way to help those in need.

A few weeks ago I helped the salvation army by giving away some of my old clothes and I also gave away some toys from when I was a baby. My sister and I both did this and we got rid of a lot of stuff so our rooms were more than tidy (sorted) and we gave them to the salvation army because they like to give your old stuff, to someone who needs it which I think is a really nice thing to do. We gathered up boxes we'd sorted together out of our rooms and took them to the salvation army so they can supply people who need this stuff (and people who just come into the store and buy it) and... yeah.

The slide we had created for the whole school to enjoy was a big success! Now people pick up rubbish and put it in their colour bin; but we have a few problems... The first is that people are not just taking rubbish from their classrooms and putting it in the bins, it's full of food scrapes to which we said "that's a big no no" in assembly so I'm not sure the school got the picture. We need to fix this problem but other than that... it's going well! We're going to have another meeting to discuss things like this.

A11: Research the impact of the social media on student’s health and well-being.

A11. Research the impact of the social media on student’s health and well-being.

In 1971, the first email was delivered. More than 40 years on, social media has taken the world by storm. Social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are now used by 1 in 4 people worldwide. Such activity may seem harmless, but some researchers suggest social media may affect our mental health and well-being eg; some people that stare at screens for a while, can lead to difficulty focusing, headaches, eye discomfort, blurred vision, dry eyes, and itchy eyes, and no one wants that.

The thing that I think could help the world is if people take longer breaks from their social world and have more fun in their real life. Only two hours a day could help a lot of people around the world realise that their whole life isn’t evolved around the internet. Some students in school focus more on Youtube, or Twitter (or whatever they use) more than their education which I think is definitely not good!

C9: Attend a community event with your family! - HLC

Attend a community event with your family!

I did a kids fest activity in the Holidays with my family for fun!
We went to a workshop that someone had set up for kids fest, and made t-shirts for each other! Mine that I made had a whole lot of pretty birds on it and I painted those birds and coloured them in to make it colourful. My sisters was quite similar with birds as well but different colours for the birds!
We really enjoyed this and still have the shirts that we wear quite often on weekends or family gatherings.

Swimming Trials to zones Part 2

Swimming Trials to zones Part 2         2/3/17

Carrying on from the other blog post i made...

I'm sitting on the steps near the swimming pool. Watching the backstroke is interesting... It's cool to see other people swim and how they swim particularly. Now I wish I had entered becuase when it finished, my friend, got into the zones for swimming because she was the only one doing the race because all the fast people are doing breaststroke. :/

We line up ready for the swimming race, butterflies fluttering around in my stomach, I feel a bit sick, but anyways...
The race will start soon and i'm feeling a bit better, we line up ready for the race, we get set... and... someone falls into the pool so we have to start again. 3...2...1... GO!!! I dive in a chill running down my spine, I failed the dive AGAIN... but it doesn't matter anymore I need to do well.

I do breaststroke up to the end then turn around and come back I think I did well but when I break the surface on the last stroke I find out i'm last... (or 4th if you prefer it that way). I'm unhappy with my results but I still enjoyed the day swimming with my friends, so I still think it was worth it! :)

The care values I showed were community (for talking and chatting kindly to others), excellence (for being excellent) and respect (for respecting other if they didn't do so well in their race I still clap and cheer for them :D  )

Student Leaders #4                           07/03/2017

Today we have been deciding who will read the google slide we've all been working on to show the school our bin idea. I volunteered. I will read the Rata coloured slide because I'm a Rata house captain. We lined up for assembly on Monday and went straight over to the hall, where there were already some classes waiting patiently for the assembly to begin. We sat at the front where the student leaders all sit and, as well as those classes, wait for the assembly to begin. After a while when the assembly had already started we get invited up onto the stage, the house captains and I, and we present our google slide we've created, everyone loves the idea and so far it's working well!
The care values I showed were community, active thinking, respect and excellence!

Swimming Trials to zones Part 1

                      Swimming Trials            02/03/2017

I have signed up for the swimming trials that you trial in to go to the zones. A few other friends of mine decided to come as well, so I have some company there which is nice! I came to school in sports mufti and was wearing my togs underneath my clothes so it would be easier to take them off at Jellie Park (which is where we went to do the trials).  I am very nervous at the same time which is a feeling I often do not enjoy when I go to event like this. I brought my bag to the hall and found my other friends there so we played around in the hall for a bit after the after year 7/8's had left for technology. We started playing a bit of volleyball which made me feel less nervous and more excited for what was to come. The teacher arrived and we called out the roll then sat in the hall foyer and had a little snack out of our lunchboxes for a while until the bus arrived at Oaklands School.

We hopped on the bus after that and then when we got there we changed int our togs (which was easier for me) and then had a play around in the pool to practice a bit and get a feel for the water. I haven't practiced very much unfortunately because I came from Auckland not long ago and had to quit my swimming classes which was annoying but anyway, I felt I had a good enough chance that I could compete for something like this! :)

The teachers called out the roll again to make sure we were all here after the bus ride and then we started the races! First up was freestyle and I had entered in that so I gathered with the rest of the children doing freestyle and we got put into age-group lines so we could compete against each other fairly. I got lined up with my friends and some other competitors who were from my class back at school. In an instant it was our turn and we sectioned off into our lanes we would dive into (we didn't have to dive but I thought it would be better to do that because i'd get a bit of a head start).

We hear a whistle..... "get set"..... *a loud whistling sound* ..... And we're off! I dive in (i think i accidentally belly flopped), when i reach and take a breath to the surface I immediately start my freestyle and I kick hard and fast, my arms doing circles in the water...

We do two lengths, there and back, when i get to the end of the lane i do a tumble-turn and push off again. I'm quite tired now and my arms are starting to ache... but I must finish i tell myself. Finally, i'm on the home stretch I feel pretty good I've done this and-    I touch the wall and surface to the top of the water. I came second to last... I beat someone, but that someone was one of my friends and I feel a bit bad for that. From a distance as I look at my friend it looks like she's choking... wait.... I think she is! She reaches the end wall and starts coughing loudly. I believe she in hailed water when diving in, whoops.

She's aright now though, which is good. I'm still not that happy I came only 4th in my race. I'll do better in breaststroke, I hope. (the care values i showed were: Community and excellence, I think).

(This blog here has got a bit too long so I will split it in two if that's okay for the readers reading this. :)

Getting involved at lunchtime!

Getting involved at lunchtime!             28/2/2017

It is 12:45 at lunchtime, my friends and I are eating inside together hearing the teachers read out the notices online and on the board for today. One of them was that there would be a game of capture the flag on the field at lunchtime today which me and my friends were very interested in. We decided to get involved and play with the other kauri students on the field playing this game. We jogged over to where the pals had set it up on the field after the teachers had let us go out to enjoy lunch. They asked us to take a side, either bibs or non bibs, we chose non bibs because it would be easier to run without them. After they'd evened out the teams the first round begins and we race to the center line and try to get through to the opponents side without getting tagged, grab a flag and get back across! It was quite hard to do this though because the opposite team had very good defenders so it was almost impossible! Unfortunately the other team won and we went back to our sides to begin the second round.

The whistle blows and its back to the excitement and positive attitude! This time I dodge my way to the other side and finally make it across with a few other people that managed to make it. I grab a flag and take off at top speed, luckily most of the other team were looking the other way trying to not let people in so it was way easier to get back across to our side! We won this round safely with big smiles on our faces that we'd beaten the other team for a round that went well. But not for long because since we tied it was to the third round we had to move onto which was much harder because people were trying to win because this was the tie breaker but everyone was also very tired from the last two rounds. Sadly the last game was given to the other team through hard work and because they got three flags across to their side before our team. They won fair and square and that's what good sportsmanship is about!

Setting up assembly!

                    Setting up assembly         28/2/2017

Today I decided to help Mr. Muller set up a full school assembly with my friends. We walked there and talked on the way, then when we arrived we entered the hall respectfully and helped the other students that had come to help work with Mr. Muller to set up the chairs for the teachers, parents, the year 7/8 students, and the student leaders that sit up the front of the assembly. Mostly everyone worked on one thing at a time, like we started on the year 7/8's area of the hall then moved onto the parents and finally the teachers sitting area. When we'd finished we went out to enjoy our lunchtime on the adventure playground. :)

Technology and on the bus #1

Technology and on the bus #1          16/2/2017

I arrive early to school, come into the classroom, taking my bag with me to the mat. I make sure to grab my pencil case and hat as well. The teachers do the roll then it's onto the bus with my friends I go! We hop on and find a seat near the back then put our bags next to us and chat the way to Lincoln Primary School where we have technology. I get off the bus and say bye to all my friends since all of them are together in one class and i'm by myself in the other. :(

I come into the Wood works classroom and put my bag down next to me while I sit on a stool at a wooden table with Elizabeth. We listen to Mr. Bowers (the wood works teacher) tell us how to make the project we're making and how to sand it. Once we've been sitting for a while we go off to Mandarin and learn how to say different phrases and stuff. Then we got back and start our projects by sanding everything down and gluing the pieces together to make a cube. Then we will paint them next week and wire them to make speakers! I'm looking forward to next week when we come again!

Student Leaders #3

                         Student Leaders #3       8/2/17

Today we worked with Mrs McCloud and kept reading the book about 'eight things I wish I new when I was a school captain'. We read chapters 1-3  (nobody likes a goody two shoes, leadership is simply so much bigger than representing at school events and everyone notices my every move) they were interesting and told me facts about what other leaders had done and what not to do next time! It has told me a few things I probably wouldn't have known if I hadn't read this! We're going to keep reading this in our spare time until we've finished all 8 (plus the conclusion) chapters. :)

Student Leaders #2

                      Student Leaders #2        22/2/2017

Today We worked with Mrs McCloud on public speaking. First we got given a school journal and had to memorize quite a hard poem out of it. Then we got into pairs and practised it one them, then got into a small group, then shared to all the student leaders...
I enjoyed this experience because I enjoy reading and poems but not really to the everyone so I went in the pit a bit but afterwards I felt good that I did it!
Being a leader is not as easy as it seems. :)

Student leaders #1

                             Student leaders #1                       15/2/17

Today was the first day at planning stuff for the year to come. We watched a video telling us about what things we could work towards to accomplish during the year. We've also been adding ideas to a doc about what we should plan to make the school fun, and we're furthermore focusing a lot around house pride (Rata, Miro, Rimu and Kowhai) and making it fun to be in a house competing against each other. Some of my ideas (for fun at lunchtimes that are for kakano/kauri students) have been colouring-in competitions, competitions for the houses to compete in over the term and a bin idea all the student leaders are working on at the moment. I hope all these turn out as well as I imagine them. :)
